Cary Heating was originally established as Cary Oil Burner Co. in 1934 by Emil Bjerstedt. Prior to Cary Oil Burner Co., Emil managed the local business as an outlet of the Cary Manufacturing Co. of Waupaca, WI for 5 years. Cary Oil Burner Co. specialized in oil burning equipment, in particular, coal to oil conversions. Emil, joined by his son Bruce in 1948, continued to expand the business as natural gas became more readily available. Bruce continued the business until his retirement in 1990.
The business was purchased by Marv Becker and Carl Newcomb on March 1, 1990. Marv and Carl remained sole shareholders until December 31, 2008, when Bill Becker became the third shareholder. On July 14, 2014 Carl Newcomb sold his interest, resigned his position as President, and retired on Nov. 30, 2018.
February 18,2020 Marv Becker retired. Today, Bill Becker and Joan Steiger are owners of Cary Heating & AC.

Paul's Heating and Air Conditioning started in 1962, when Paul Schneider purchased the business from Palmer Hanson on a handshake deal. Palmer had owned and run Hanson's Heating at the George Street location since 1927. In 1999, Paul's son Pete and his cousin Mike bought the business from Paul. The business remained at the George Street location until the end of 2009. That building was an icon of the north side of La Crosse and will always be remembered as "the one with the polar bear".
In January of 2010, Pete and Mike found that the business had outgrown its current location and relocated it, and the polar bear, to its current location on Oak Forest Drive in Onalaska.
