South Shore 1871: our founder Alvin Hollis was both a startup businessman and community servant.
Back then, most everyone needed hay and grain. To reduce costs, Alvin built a railroad siding and purchased by the carload. Deliveries to homes and farms were by horse drawn wagons.
Diversifying into heating and cooling, Alvin began offering firewood and ice. He purchased woodlots, built an ice house by Weymouth Great Pond and delivered year round to homes, farms and businesses.
When coal replaced wood, Alvin and son-in-law Leonard Bicknell built a modern coal storage plant and used 'motorized' trucks for delivery.
As coal powered systems advanced, we introduced 'Central Heating Systems' to the South Shore.
Alvin Bicknell, Leonard's son, transitioned from coal to oil by installing many of the first 'automatic' heating systems in the state.
