ServiceMaster was founded in Chicago in 1929 as a moth-proofing company by Marion E. Wade, a former minor league baseball player. Wade, who operated out of his home, had a strong personal faith and desire to honor God in all he did. Translating this into the marketplace, he viewed each individual employee and customer as being worthy of dignity and respect. Eventually, Wade's vision shaped the company's objectives: Honor God in All We Do; Help People Develop; Pursue Excellence; and Grow Profitably. In 2005, the board of directors ratified the first change to these company objectives in more than 30 years: The objective "Excel with Customers" replaced "Pursue Excellence." The company's objectives were refreshed in 2010 and renamed The ServiceMaster Commitment, which was expanded to include eight core values. Courtesy Care Cleaning was formed in 1981 by Allen and Suzanne Birk. Starting out in the family garage, Courtesy Care primarily did janitorial work for companies such as K-Mart and Wal-Mart. In 1997, the company exploded into the Carpet Cleaning and Water Damage Restoration Industries with the purchase of its first Truck-Mounted Hot Water Extraction machine and moved into the building at 1201 SE Adams Blvd. in Bartlesville, OK.
